About Me
Jean Kubes-Werremeyer
Background
Growing up in Minnesota, my summers were filled with sculpting and building in our big backyard sandbox, the sandy beaches of the many Minnesota lakes, and the sand surrounding the Shakopee pool. In the winter coloring books, watercolor sets and play dough took over.
In High School, I enjoyed pottery, painting and drawing classes with Bill Farmer. The world of creating art opened my eyes and more importantly a little of my soul.
I went to St. Catherine's University where I majored in art and had a chance to further explore ceramics, painting, drawing and printmaking with Sr. Celine Charpentier, Peter Lupori, Carol Fischer, Sr. Jean Nelson and Robert Nelson.
Then, the west called, and I moved to Colorado where I would spend the next 34 years teaching Elementary and Middle students.
Traveling in the west I hiked the mountains, deserts, valleys; rafted, canoed the rivers and lakes; explored caves and ruins; swam and soaked in rivers, creeks, and hot springs. I loved the rawness of the western part of our country. I loved the beauty and diversity of the flora and fauna of Mother Earth along with the openness of celestial skies.
But it wasn’t until 2017 when I spent four days at an Intuitive Painting Retreat in Wisconsin with Sr. Gabe Uchlein that my heart was ready to authentically express what I’d really been searching for to fill my soul. Six months later I returned to Wisconsin for Mandala Making and I’ve been creating them ever since.
In the fall of 2019, I moved back to the Minnesota River Valley, where I continue to draw, paint, an display my art. I also teach and co-lead classes and workshops in a variety of locations, for teens and adults with focuses of celebration and spiritual intention.
My Art
My mandala or circle creations are mixed media of watercolor, colored pencil, gel pen, permanent marker, paint pen and Japanese rice crayons. I’m inspired by places, nature, the cosmos, emotions and spirituality.
My paintings are created with as much freedom from ego as possible, allowing the color, image, shape to come through authentically and intuitively. The originals are created on nothing smaller than 18” x 24” , 100 lb. paper. While my giclees capture the essence of the original with acrylic paint embellishments.
I’ve had the opportunity to display my work at Workshop in NE Minneapolis, The Show Gallery in Lowertown St. Paul, and multiple shows at the Arts Consortium of Carver County. I have also participated in Twin City Metro Art Fairs and Festivals. My work is for sale at Collective Dimensions, ARC Retreat Center and The Christine Center. I've started offering painting and drawing workshops and retreats for curious seekers. Please see Workshops, News/Events for offerings and locations.
